Steps to a professional index In order to provide an index for you I will need a set of proofs provided either in hard copy, as a PDF file or in another format (by prior agreement). These should be provided when the project is almost completed i.e. when the text appears as it will in the finished article, page numbers have been allocated and tables, illustrations etc. have been added. An index can be altered or taken on at short notice if needed, but it is much better (and cheaper for you) if the index is commissioned when the project is near completion but not extremely close to the publishing deadline. Time scale should always be taken into account - an average index of around 200 pages will take around 2 weeks to complete, a more complex index or for a larger book will take longer. Apart from the proofs I will also need a style sheet if you have one and details of any other requirements. These will allow me to produce an index to your specifications. Once you know you are going to need an index, contact me and we can discuss your requirements. All my indexes are created to comply to British Standards using specialised indexing software and delivered as an e-mail attachment. Copyright Copyright is usually assigned to the indexer, however in certain circumstances it may be allocated to the publisher. This should be discussed when the index is being commissioned. |
